Business + Publicity, Motherhood + Life

This is the ONLY thing you need to conquer 2017.

Happy (almost) New Year!

Both personally and professionally, 2016 was a big year:

My family moved into a new house and we welcomed our second daughter just months later!

My firm celebrated 4 yeas of business and took on new projects, bigger clients, and created some impressive PR campaigns if I do say so myself, including: opening a major Detroit brand in West Michigan, juggling local and national media coverage on election night, personal publicity for a rock star mompreneur, collaborating with dozens of top mom and baby brands, and more.

I connected clients with dream opportunities and found myself in front of the camera in multiple markets to share everything from business advice to the latest and greatest mom gear (once even with a yelling baby strapped to my chest!).

I’m proud of what I accomplished this past year- but there were a few challenges, losses and disappointments too. That’s life (and business for that matter). It’s all lessons and growth to carry over into the next year.

But enough about all of that. Let’s get real for a moment.

When thinking about the new year and what kind of goals I should set, what grand plan I should create, whose advice to follow… it occurred to me. I don’t need another tactic. I don’t need another inspirational business book. I’ve read enough. I’ve studied enough. And I bet you have too.

To sum it up in one single word, what we really need in 2017 is…

That’s it! Seriously, we just need to show up.

Sure, set your goals (and my advice, not too far ahead).

Lay out a plan… but don’t spend more than a few hours doing it.

It’s time we actually get to work.

I read the 12 Week Year by Brian Moran about a month ago and it inspired me to change how I set goals in my business, schedule my week and how I start my day. I also listen to a lot of podcasts and I’ve been taking in inspiration from so many different angles and all of a sudden it was like Gary V screaming in my ear (except it was my voice, ha) JUST START EMILY. Quit all this inspiration. You have enough inspiration! Make 2017 the year of doing.

I actually made my plans and started my “year” this past week so there would be no excuses, and it felt amazing to get a jump on the new year.

If you don’t have a game plan, here’s my super simple advice to get you EXECUTING and crushing your goals in the new year:

  1. Set big goals with small timelines. Stretch yourself so you feel that fire to hustle… and make your timeframe shorter (like Q1, 12 weeks, etc.) instead of the whole year.
  2. Break these goals down into specific activities you need to do weekly + daily in order to achieve them.
  3. Schedule these tasks into your weekly schedule. Time blocking is a game changer. Literally go into your calendar and block out the first two hours of your day— this is time to focus on your big goals.
  4. Track your results. No brainer- if you’re not tracking it, is it actually happening?
  5. SHOW UP. Actually execute and follow the plan. Those first two hours of my day are me showing up and doing the high level work- not email, social media, or catching up on other projects, random client requests or errands. It sounds simple but it’s pretty hard to stay focused on a bigger picture project for two hours when you know you have emails piling up. This has been probably the single most life-changing activity I’ve done for my business this year and I just started going it this month! That’s how big of an impact I think it will have (and has already had).
  6. Simplify. Basically, do whatever you need to do in your personal life to free up the physical and mental space to make this all happen. Whatever takes up too much time in your life or is a thorn in your side— SIMPLIFY it!

Wardrobe/doing laundry, household clutter and finding time to eat healthy meals were top of the list. So, I packed away all my clothes but the stuff I actually want to wear and was left with about 35 pieces of clothing total, broken down into 3 drawers and some that hangs in the closet. Now getting dressed takes me all of 5 minutes and my laundry is simple– I don’t have weeks of outfits piling up before I do it!

For meals- I still haven’t figured this one out completely… we’ve done meal kits, we enjoy making healthy meals when we have the time but we’re still ordering out more than I’d like. So to make it fool proof, I am going to have an easy, not-so-exciting but healthy go-to meal in the fridge at all times that is a full vegetarian protein: rice and beans. I discovered that my toddler also enjoyed eating it so, sold! I’ll probably get bored of it, but I don’t care. Eating boring, healthy food that is going to fuel me to accomplish big things in the first part of the new year is worth it.

There you have it!

I’m sharing an inside look at some of this- like showing you my closet… it’s not glamorous but a few people have asked to see how it works. And I’ll show you my planner and how I schedule in my calendar over on Instagram Stories.

One thing I want to leave you with, that Brian Moran repeats throughout his book that is really powerful:

There are two versions of our lives: the one we are living… and the one we are capable of living.

Let’s make 2017 the year we are capable of.

Happy New Year, friends! No let’s go… and EXECUTE!

As a working mom of 3 busy boys, I get it. One of our top meal planning tips: we make a double batch of our sauteed beans/rice/onions/peppers mixture and freeze half of it. We can quickly pull out the frozen half and add cooked rice for burritos during the week, or simply heat it up for tacos. I’ve also found freezing individual homemade burritos in tin foil (do not bake them before freezing) is excellent for a grab-n-go lunch or quickly-heat-homemade-dinner for the family. The only trick is to let them thaw in the refrigerator before reheating so that the edges don’t get hard.
